In 2008, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories—the birthplace of the Arctic Winter Games—had the honour of hosting the 20th edition of this cherished circumpolar celebration. Returning to where it all began, the milestone Games served as both a powerful tribute to the past and a vibrant showcase of northern talent, culture, and community spirit.

The 20th Arctic Winter Games featured 19 official sports, highlighting the depth and diversity of athletic excellence across the North. Competitions included badminton, basketball, cross-country skiing, curling, Dene Games, dog mushing, figure skating, gymnastics, hockey, indoor soccer, Inuit Games, ski biathlon, snowboarding, snowshoe biathlon, snowshoeing, speed skating, table tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
