After a week off playing (due to a small injury from car door hitting my mouth), I am taking the opportunity to refine the embouchure. A small mouthpiece (the inner diameter) can help to do this as long as the air production and lip vibrations are worked very well. If the production is not superb then the notes do not speak. The important thing is to not try to manipulate the lip.
