The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of standalone, cinematic branching horror games where the decisions you make in the game determine the story and the outcome you receive.

House of Ashes is the third game in the series.
In House of Ashes, at the close of the Iraq War, Special Forces hunting for weapons of mass destruction unearth something far deadlier – a buried Sumerian temple containing a nest of unearthly creatures. To survive the night below, they must forge a brotherhood with their enemies from the world above.

Iraq, 2003. As the conflict draws to a close, CIA field operative Rachel King joins an elite military unit on a raid of a suspected underground chemical weapons facility in the shadow of the Zagros Mountains.

Arriving at the coordinates, the unit is ambushed by a local patrol led by Sergeant Salim Othman. During the battle, an earthquake opens sinkholes in the ground, pitching both sides into the ruins of a buried Sumerian temple. In the darkness beneath the Arabian Desert, something evil is awakened. Savage and unstoppable, a nest of ancient and unearthly creatures has a new prey to hunt.

Horrific discoveries and impossible decisions face the survivors as they strive to navigate the underworld and escape the terrifying threat. Will they each prioritize their own survival, or put aside their fears and their personal rivalries to fight together as one?

As the first game in the anthology to be released on a new generation consoles, House of Ashes also features many new mechanics.

The most important innovation is a difficulty setting: Forgiving, Challenging and Lethal. Players are now able to adjust the speed of QTE execution to their liking. Aiming QTE has changed - instead of aiming at a specific point, it is now enough to aim at a zone. Fixed cameras are entirely replaced by a 360-degree camera, and the flashlight has also been added, allowing to explore dark caves in search of secrets and paths.

The Moral Compass has been redesigned. While in previous games bearings were depicted as a compass, in House of Ashes it was redesigned as a crows and became similar to Until Dawn's Butterfly effect. There has been a small addition to the secrets. When player finds pages from Randolph Hodgson's journal, a mini cutscenes appears. There is also a switch between several protagonists per chapter. This time, unlike Little Hope, where the switch took place between two protagonists, all five protagonists can be playable per chapter.
