#FIR An FIR, or First Information Report, is a written document that the police create when they receive information about a crime. It's a basic right of the victim of a crime, and the police are required to register it as soon as possible.

According to Section 156 of the CrPC, the police are permitted to look into a criminal offence without a formal FIR or a magistrate's order. The magistrate can order an investigation if the police don't conduct one. The magistrate, however, cannot stop the police from investigating if they do so.

#Section 173 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1898 outlines the rules and procedures for investigating agencies to file a report after an investigation is complete.
