Karur is among the most hallowed and ancient sacred spot associated with the worship of Lord Shiva. In the concept based Saivite philosophy and religious traditions, the legend relates to the role of Shiva as the Lord of the consciousness of true knowledge. Further the dance of Natraja is full of esoteric and spiritual significance. The Ananda Thadava of the Lord Shiva is protection, Transformation, containment and grace. The Natraja icon representing this manifestation of Shiva has been universally praised for its exquisite beauty and aesthetic nuances. It is this figure that has been a perennial inspiration for the art of dance.it is thus most appropriate that the medium of dance has been adopted as an important expression of devotion and worship. For the practitioners of ‘Natya’ such an offering is the most eloquent ‘Anjali’. This tradition has been in vogue since long.

The Natyanjali Dance Festival is a festival dedicated to Lord Nataraj, the dancing manifestation of Lord Shiva this event is an entire celebration of Dance, organized by Karur Natyanjali Trust. The Natyanjali Dance festival has dancers coming from all over the world to present their talent and to offer their dance to Lord Nataraj. All dancers dressed in traditional attire that reflect the rich and diverse culture of India through their dances.

With a view to revive and consolidate this tradition a concerted effort was started in 2010 in the form of annual event, Natyanjali with the active cooperation of the Karur temple administration. The temple provides an ideal backdrop for the event as the performances take place in the vicinity of the holy sanctum. Over the years Natyanjali has grown in status developing into International Festival presenting many styles of Indian classical Dance. Participation and response have acquired International dimension. The Five Days event now features about 300 to 400 dancers. The festival is organized by the Trust known as ‘Karur Natyanjali Trust’.
