March 23rd, 2024. A historic but also quite the sorrowful one. Today at gloomy Santa Clara, California, U.S.A. Caltrain has begun retiring their aging rolling stock of Nippon Sharyo Gallery Cars. This comes as storage space is desperately needed to accommodate their new Stadler KISS EMU train sets that are being rapidly delivered to the Bay Area from Salt Lake City.

Caltrain announced the retirement of the 12 cars on their social media platforms the day prior, hosting a mini "get together" event of rail enthusiasts at Santa Clara Station. The train was set to arrive between 8:30am to 10:30am. But due to unexpected delays and imminent rain, the retirement train was severely delayed being built/put together in Downtown San Francisco at the yard by Caltrain's 4th & King Street/San Francisco station.

Lots of frustration and impatience filled the minds of rail enthusiasts sitting in the rain but the passing Caltrain, Amtrak and Capitol Corridor Trains kept the crowd occupied and entertained. Finally around 3:00PM, the retirement train of 14 Gallery Cars departs San Francisco heading South to Santa Clara's Newhall Yard, just adjacent to Santa Clara Station. The train arrived 45 minutes later with F40PH 901 (JPBX 901) at the lead with MP15 503 (JPBX503) trailing. The crew then disconnects the cars and depart as a power move back to the CEMOF (Central Equipment & Maintenance Facility) in San Jose.
These 12 gallery cars will be sent up north to Sonoma via Union Pacific in the coming days.
