Why did Darth Malgus have to wear a breathing mask?

More than 3500 years before the Battle of Yavin, Malgus led the Sith Empire’s invasion on the planet Alderaan. Ambushed by Republic Special Forces, the Sith Lord protected himself with the Force but was severely damaged by rocket explosions.

When Jedi Knight Satele Shan joined the fight, a Republic soldier tackled the Sith Lord while holding a live grenade as he dueled the Jedi. Malgus was further damaged by the explosion.

Shan then used the Force to blast Malgus into a cliffside, causing the entire cliff to collapse on top of him.

Using the Force to survive the encounter and suppress his pain, Malgus then found himself in a duel with two Jedi. One of the Jedi collapsed two buildings on the Sith Lord, but Malgus again protected himself with the Force and quickly eliminated both of these Jedi.

Malgus’ injuries were so severe he was forced to wear a respirator for the rest of his life.
