Properly mixing thinset is very important to the performance of any tile installation. Improperly mixed mortar can result in a weaker bond, lack of transfer to the tile and unpredictable pot life of the setting material. We know that if every bucket is mixed alike it makes the installation go much smoother. We measure the water for every bucket we mix to ensure that we can maintain our warranty from the manufacturer.

Step by step procedure is measuring the water (5.5-6.5 qts clean cool water), mix for 5 minutes below 300 rpm, slake (let the mortar sit) for 10 minutes, then mix it again for an additional 3 minutes.

The purpose for this is all based on the chemical reaction between the water and the cement materials. Once the water and mortar touch the chemical bond starts to form. If we don’t slake the mortar that bond will continue to accelerate and shorten our workability time. By shaking (mixing again) the mud we break down the bonds that have started forming and it takes longer for the bond to form again. The second time the bond takes place is also stronger than the first time.

Not all manufacturers require a slake time. Always follow the directions of the manufacturer you are using. Also, never add additional water to the mix once you’ve let it slake. Doing so can significantly weaken your material. If the thinset starts to stiffen on you, you can remix it and it will soften. Just don’t add additional water.
