On January 15, 1919, Boston’s North End was shaken by one of the strangest and deadliest disasters in American history. A giant storage tank holding more than 2 million gallons of molasses suddenly burst, sending a 25-foot-high wave of sticky syrup crashing through the streets at 35 miles per hour. Homes were destroyed, businesses collapsed, and lives were lost in what became known as The Great Molasses Flood.
