- 전쟁 속에서도 반드시 피워야 할 평화의 꽃 한 송이
‘초토(焦土)’는 불에 타서 검게 그을린 땅이라는 뜻으로, 작품명 ‘초토(焦土)의 꽃’은 전쟁으로 인해 황폐해진 상태에서도 꽃 한 송이를 피워내듯 새로운 삶을 시작해야 하는 인류의 모습을 의미한다. 되풀이되는 전쟁 속에서도 인류가 하나의 운명 공동체임을 자각하지 못하고 있는 점에 안타까움을 느낀 장석진 작곡가는 더 나은 세상을 위해 약자에게 배타적인 태도를 버리고, 서로 다름을 존중하며 평화로운 삶을 추구하길 바라는 마음을 작품에 담아냈다.
국악 타악기와 서양 타악기가 짝을 이뤄 연주되며, 서로 더 큰 비중을 차지하기 위해 경쟁하는 듯한 구성은 외세의 영향 속 한민족의 모습을 상징한다. 외부에서 이질적인 것이 들어온 후, 격렬한 혼란을 딛고 조화를 이뤄가는 과정을 느낄 수 있다. 일관된 박자 가운데 진행되는 음악적 변화는 인류의 역사적인 사건들 역시 초침처럼 일정한 틀에 담겨있음을 나타낸다.
사운드 디자인 능력이 탁월한 장석진은 관현악 전체의 음향 구조를 통합적으로 구상하며 각 파트에 적절한 리듬과 선율을 부여하고, 악기의 기법적인 요소를 최대한 활용해 곡을 완성했다. 또한 고요함 속 음악적 긴장과 이완의 효과를 위해 다양한 타악기를 사용하여 음향적 변화를 주었다.

A piece of peace that shall bloom in war
The word ‘Cho-to (ravaged earth)’ refers to darkly burnt land and the title ‘A daffodil on ravaged earth’ implies mankind to move on and start a new life just as the devastated earth blooms flowers anew.
Recurring wars haven’t succeeded to persuade people to understand the common fate they share, In pity, composer Chang Suk-jin talks about peace in respect toward differences and generosity for the weak to make our world a better place.
As Korean and Western percussions pair up, they play like they’re competeing to occupy more parts in the song. This symbolizes our nation under foreign influence. It implies people overcoming the intense chaos and moving toward harmony after foreign inflow. The musical change progressing in regular rhythm shows how the historical events of mankind are held in an orderly shape like the second hand of a clock.
Chang Suk-jin reveals his excellence in sound design by organizing the complete orchestration in an integrated acoustic structure, fully taking advantage of the techniques of the instruments to give every part of the piece the right rhythm and melody. For musical tension and relief in serenity, various percussions are employed for acoustic alteration.
