Portrait Painting in Cotman Watercolor Set: Pretty Little Liars Fan Art of Spencer.
I painted Spencer Hastings from PLL in watercolor using the Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolor pocket set.

PAINTING PROCESS
I made the pencil sketch on grid paper using the grid method to get the proportions right and transferred the sketch using graphite transfer paper.

After transferring, I taped the watercolor paper down on a piece of hardboard with painter's tape to keep it stretched out. The paper I use is 250 gsm, rough watercolor paper. It does buckle from the paint and it's not completely smooth after drying. So, I should move on to either use thicker paper or wet the paper and stretch it while it's wet using water-adhesive tape.

I started by wetting the background and adding blue watercolor. And then painted the skin. The reference is from Pretty Little Liars season 6 prom. I chose this scene because of the blue lighting and blue shadows on Spencer's face. I thought it would be interesting to paint especially with watercolors.

I layered the watercolor and let skin tones and hair color dry before adding layers of blue shadows on them. I wanted to tie picture together with using blue on everything. The background is blue, there's blue on her eyes, her lips, her earrings, her dress and skin and hair. I went from bigger areas into small details.
