OCD is a doubting disorder that can completely take over one’s life. ERP is one of the most effective methods to fight back.
If ERP is considered the gold standard treatment, why is it not utilized more? The simple answer is because it is CHALLENGING, both for the client and the therapist. But, with DETERMINATION, you can learn how to do ERP and find healing on the other side.
ERP effectively trains one’s brain that a triggering thought, image or event can be tolerated without responding with anxiety or a ritualistic, compulsive behavior.
To begin ERP, identify your triggers and create a hierarchy of thoughts, actions or events that cause anxiety. Most people begin ERP with an exposure that is relatively easy to successfully complete, while not engaging in compulsive behaviors or rituals. It is not advisable to calm yourself or escape the negative feelings during the exposure. By staying in this anxious feeling and exposure, your brain learns that nothing bad happens. New neuropathways are formed that do not include the need for compulsive behaviors to relieve anxious thoughts.
**** Occasionally research comes along that advances our field. The work of Michelle Craske and Inhibitory Learning Theory has advanced and changed the way we treat OCD. After I made this video, I made several changes in my treatment of OCD including no longer using Cognitive Therapy techniques like working on cognitive distortions or Examine the Evidence or Check the Facts with ERP. I also no longer use hierarchies or SUDS scores, and the goal of the exposures are safety learning when exposed to fear triggers and learning that anxiety and uncertainty can be tolerated.
