As topics on gender, relationships and sex become more commonly discussed in the UK school curriculum. We are joined by Yusuf Patel from SREIslamic to discuss how to appropriately handle conversations with children on sex and relationships and the Islamic resources available. Strong Support also runs a Parents circle that supports parents who have children that identify as LGBTQ or are struggling with sexual or gender identity.

O you who have attained faith, let those whom you rightfully possess and those of you who have not reached puberty seek your permission (before entering) on three occasions: before the dawn prayer and at noon when you lay aside your clothes and after the evening prayer—three occasions of privacy for you. Brother Yusuf established SREIslamic in October 2008 in response to the Labour government’s intention to make Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) statutory in schools. To date, SREIslamic has run hundreds of seminars and workshops and supported tens of thousands of parents concerned with how SRE (Sex Education and Relationships Education) is taught in schools. Yusuf was the sole representative of the Muslim community to give evidence at the Education Committee’s inquiry into SRE in 2014. He also was recently a co-signatory to the Muslim response on a ban to conversion therapy.

Yusuf Patel is the founder of SREIslamic, which provides advice, support and training to parents concerned with how Sex and Relationship Education (SRE/RHE/RSHE) is taught in schools, particularly at primary level. SREIslamic has conducted over a thousand seminars/workshops across the country since it was founded in 2008. He also established Parental Guidance, which aims to create a movement of confident Muslim parents that are equipped to discuss sex, relationships and LGBT with their children in line with Islamic values.
