What careers are there working with emerging renewable energy technologies and policies?  How can I start working on international environmental issues? Join us in conversation with Jamil Shariff in December to learn more about a career in the exciting fields of international community engagement, appropriate technologies, and renewable energy/energy efficiency policy development.

Jamil is the principal at Green Evil Genius Consulting, a boutique firm focused on innovation and sustainability in remote regions.  While working towards running his own consulting firm, he stayed busy! He has worked all over the world, converted his own vehicle to run on a renewable resource, written a book of environmental projects to promote learning and innovation, co-developed appropriate technologies in remote regions of the world, and helped businesses producing and distributing them to flourish.  

He has held a large variety of positions including Senior Technical Expert at Econoler – a Quebec-headquartered consulting firm with over 35 years of experience working energy efficiency in Canada and globally - working on projects in the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa, and Central and East Asia.  He was a Senior Advisor at SNV Netherland Development Organisation – the development implementation organization of the Dutch government - working on biogas, solar and cookstove implementation projects in Central Africa; and an Appropriate Technology and Business Development Advisor at the Aga Khan Foundation – a large global private international development organization - and their local implementing agencies, working throughout Central Asia and in West Africa. 

Jamil has nearly 20 years of experience in a wide variety of roles in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency technology and policy development and is the author of 50 Green Projects for the Evil Genius, published by McGraw-Hill Professional in 2008.  He started his career doing technical support for environmental organizations in Washington, DC in the year 2000 before returning to Alberta to work on policy and technical projects with local non-profit organizations.  In 2007 he completed an MSc in energy and the environment in architecture from the University of East London, UK and in 2016 he finished a certificate in climate finance from the Frankfurt school of finance in Germany.  He has worked in over 20 countries around the world including Afghanistan, Cameroon, Mali, Tajikistan, Kosovo, Turkey, Morocco, Benin, Sierra Leone, Iran and Pakistan.
