In our second episode of Industry Voices, Klaus, Jean-Noël and Matthias discuss the future of our industry: an intelligent combination of onsite events and online tradeshows with a lot of digital products around it.
Who are our Industry Voices this week?
Klaus Dittrich, Chairmain and CEO of #MesseMünchen, is responsible for #Bauma as well as the #IAAMobility car show, which will take place for the first time in September this year in Munich.
Jean-Noël Onfield is the Chief Editor of #ChantiersdeFrance and #RouteActualité, two trade magazines in France. He's been in the industry for 20 years, so you could say he knows the industry quite well!
Matthias Ressel has been with #RitchieBros. for 9 years, and he is the regional sales manager for the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).
How Covid affected the Industry
From an all time record year in 2019 with the biggest Bauma ever, the start of 2020 looked good. Then, beginning early March, Klaus recalls having to cancel every tradeshow in Munich until now.
Jean-Noel had a similar experience: "This health crisis, it changed a lot of things. We're an equipment magazine, so we have to be on the job site. Since last April, I flew twice and made maybe 5 factory visits - that's all. So, it changed a lot".
Matthias agrees: " We had to reinvent the way we work. Before we were very present:
we attended a lot of tradeshows. Personally for example, I had a lot of flights, meeting customers, meeting with my team. Now, I'm mainly working from home."
Digital became necessary in the equipment industry: but was that new?
With regard to Bauma, digital solutions were already a hot topic in 2019. They had for example a VR experience area. The topic of digital construction sites, autonomous driving,
construction machines.... all of these will be even more important at the next Bauma in 2022.
Today we have to be 'multi-channel'. That's to say web, print, but not only that - we have to do more. We have to propose new formats, some new events, and make the community live and give more information.
According to Matthias from Ritchie Bros., technology is helping us to be more productive than we used to be before: "As we're currently selling our auctions only through our Timed Auctions format, we're more productive! We can use the time in between more efficiently
and interact with even more people than before."
What is the Future of the Industry?
Nobody knows exactly what this virus will do in the future, but the concept of hybrid events
can be a solution. On the one hand, the onsite experience is necessary as customers love it, but there are those who can't participate, and for them we also provide a solution: a digital version online. People will still meet at tradeshows such as Bauma or Agritechnica, but there will also be more Zoom and Teams meetings as people will not see the benefit of travelling that much.
