Based on John Grisham's 1995 novel, Peacock's criminal drama series The Rainmaker revolves around Rudy Baylor, a young attorney played by Milo Callaghan. When Rudy graduated from law school, he was excited and full of hope. Given that he was among the top students in his class, a lucrative position at a prominent legal firm was a given. Although he was excited for his first day at the Tinley Britt firm, things didn't go as planned. He got into a fight with his mother's partner, Hank, just as he was ready to depart.

It appears that we already have a suspect in the Donny Ray case, and Rudy Baylor hasn't even begun to investigate it. A house caught fire in the opening sequence of the first episode of The Rainmaker. When he woke up, a man with a respiratory ailment smelled smoke. A woman was resting on the bed with her eyes wide open as he attempted to get to the next room. Her lack of response raised the possibility that she had passed away or been murdered prior to the fire. Maybe she was confined to her bed because of a medical condition? That is unknown to us yet. The house was already destroyed when assistance arrived, but the man was able to leave it on foot.

At the hospital Rudy & Deck visited, we run across this man once more. His wounds were bandaged, and he was in handcuffs. Rudy discovered that a few nurses who were on the floor at the time had left the hospital when he began researching the Donny Ray case. When Deck looked up the name of one of the emergency room nurses, Melvin Pritcher, online, he discovered that he was the same man they had encountered in the hospital. Melvin had been taken into custody on arson accusations. Since he was the only person at the crime site, Melvin was suspected of lighting the fire. According to one source, Melvin was the son of Evalene, the woman who perished in the fire. Rudy and Deck made the decision to confront Melvin outside the courtroom the following day while he was being arraigned. His attorney forbade Melvin from responding to any of their inquiries when they attempted to question him.

Melvin Pritcher, who was released on bond, was spotted outside an apartment at night in the conclusion of The Rainmaker episode 1. He knocked on the glass door first, but when no one answered, he cunningly opened the sliding door and entered. He had hoped to see a familiar face there, and it appeared that he was somehow connected to the site. An older woman came up to him and said that if he was searching for a woman named Jackie, he should be aware that she had already moved out (perhaps Jackie was trying to get away from Melvin?). Melvin pivoted and confronted the elderly lady.

Melvin was carrying a syringe filled with what might have been a tranquilizer. She instantly fell to the ground as he casually inserted the syringe into her neck. It's likely that Melvin was looking for something of value at the apartment—possibly something related to Donny's case? He feared that whatever he was looking for was gone now that Jackie was gone. Although Melvin is undoubtedly a dubious person, was he the cause of Donny's passing? We'll just have to watch and wait.
