TThe new Mazda CX-60 arrives as the brand's first plug-in hybrid model, bringing some premium aspirations to the practical SUV package. Sitting above the CX-5 in size, the CX-60 aims to tempt buyers away from the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 with its smart styling, upmarket interior and efficient powertrains.

At launch there's a choice of either diesel or plug-in hybrid engines, with a petrol unit still to come. The PHEV combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol with an electric motor for a total of 323hp, resulting in brisk performance - 0-62mph takes just 5.8 seconds. However, the PHEV's real-world electric range is disappointingly short at under 30 miles.

Most buyers will be better served by the smooth and punchy 197hp diesel. It strikes the best balance between performance and economy, with claimed 56.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 133g/km. Go for the pricier 251hp diesel if you need the extra grunt. Both diesels drive the front wheels only, with the PHEV getting all-wheel drive.

Ride comfort is a sticking point in the CX-60. The firm suspension delivers agile handling but results in an unsettled, jiggly ride. Rivals like the XC60 and CR-V are more compliant over bumps and ruts. Cabin refinement is reasonable, with road and wind noise well suppressed at highway speeds.

The interior has premium appeal thanks to its upmarket design and quality materials. An abundance of soft-touch plastics combines with smart leather and alloy trim for a truly upmarket ambience. The massive 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is a highlight, with its crisp graphics, intuitive interface and standard wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.

Passenger space is generous up front and perfectly fine for two adults in the rear, though a little tight for three abreast. The boot swallows a highly practical 570 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to over 1700 litres seats down.

Well equipped from the entry Exclusive-Line trim, standard kit includes leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, heated seats and a powered tailgate. Splash out more for the Homura or Takumi models to add extra driver assistance tech, ambient lighting, ventilated seats and more.

In summary, the CX-60 brings Mazda up against some stiff competition in the mid-size premium SUV segment. While it impresses with its smart interior, strong engines and generous standard kit, ride comfort falls short along with rear passenger room. Company car drivers may also find cheaper PHEV options elsewhere.
