Hello, I’m Veronica Combs. I’m running for Floyd County commission.
Commissioners are sort of the project managers for the county that are responsible for roads and bridges infrastructure. They also appoint people to a lot of different boards ranging from stormwater and EMS to youth shelter and public health board so they serve on the board and they also appoint people.
There are three reasons that I am a good choice for Floyd County commissioner and they’re all related to my professional work history as a former journalist. The first reason that I would be a good commissioner is that I am really good at mastering new subjects. I worked for daily publications and learned something new every day. To do that, you have to be able to interview people, gather data, do some reading, pick up the most important points and then make a decision. Commissioners, as I mentioned before, are responsible for a lot of different things. At one meeting they talked about snow day policy for county employees, Purchasing an $800,000 truck to clean out sewers, and spending opioid settlement; so they have a lot of responsibilities and you have to jump in and learn new things.
The second reason that I'd be a good Commissioner is that I'm good at asking questions. When you're faced with new subjects, you have to ask questions to figure out what’s going on these questions from how much will it cost if we do nothing? What are other communities doing? What is the best choice for the future? Who will it affect? How much will it cost? So I ask questions to learn for myself a new topic, but also to boost other peoples understanding. Everybody needs to understand how decisions get made. By asking questions, that's a really good way to do that.
The third reason that I would be a good commissioner is because I can manage change. As a journalist, if you think about what the Courier Journal looked like 30 years ago it looks very different today when I started my career, there was no internet there was no X, Facebook, Discord, or Instagram people got information in much fewer ways, and as I worked for a lot of different publications, I’ve seen good way to deal with change, and bad ways to deal with change. The key to success in any endeavor is the ability to deal with change. You don’t change for change's sake, but if something isn’t working, you have to make a decision.
So, I’m good at learning new subjects asking good questions, and facing change in a positive way. I want our community to be safe, healthy and prosperous for everyone, not just for a few people not for a small group of people but for everyone. So as commissioner, I would use my skills as a journalist and my love for the community to make good decisions and help us roll with the punches come out safe, healthy, and prosperous.
