Returning to the Best Long Trail in the US - Hayduke Trail Thru Hike 12

The Hayduke Trail is an 850 mile hike across Utah, and in this section we are actually crossing paths with one of my favorite thru hikes in the United States, the Arizona Trail! It runs from south to north across the state of Arizona for 800 miles, starting at the Mexico Border and finishing at the border with Utah. The AZT is as good as it gets when it comes to thru hiking and long distance trails in the United States!

Since our hike of the Hayduke Trail runs east to west across Utah and Arizona, it actually utilizes about 60 miles of the Arizona Trail near the towns of Kanab and Jacob Lake. It is a nice relaxing break to be on such a well maintained, well marked, and well used trail such as the AZT! Especially considering what the Hayduke has been putting us through recently.

We hiked through the upper Buckskin Gulch, which is known as the longest slot canyon in the entire country! It's walls ebb and flow, with super tight and narrow sections, and then more open areas. It is such a spectacular and popular day hike for anyone who is in the area of Page, Flagstaff, Kanab, or Jacob Lake. It's a dayhike that I would highly recommend, and one that I have done multiple times before.

Just nearby Buckskin Gulch, we also hiked through the Wire Pass Slot Canyon, another amazing area worth checking out. A fun slot canyon, complete with petroglyphs. The Wire Pass is also known for The Wave, which is one of the most well known day hikes in the southwest. Unfortunately the wave requires permits that can be difficult to get, so we did not attempt to do it while here.

Heading south from the Wire Pass Trailhead, we cross the Utah Arizona Border for the first time in this trip. For more than 500 miles we've been hiking across Utah, and now finally we begin the Arizona portion of this trail on our way to the Grand Canyon. It's kind of surreal being back on the AZT, and being back in Arizona after three years of being away.

The Arizona Trail is without a doubt one of the best long distance thru hikes in the entire country. Passing through a lot of different environments given extreme elevation changes, you'll find crazy plants that exist nowhere else in the country, weird animals like Gila Monsters, Javalina, Kangaroo Rats, Coatimundi and Ring Tail Cats. The trail is maintained perfectly, it is graded well in steep mountains, and the scenery is spectacular thru and thru.

The AZT is one of my favorite thru hikes that I have ever done. Right up there with the Pacific Crest Trail, so if you like hiking out west, or if you enjoyed the PCT, I know you would love the AZT as well!
