Low lake level pumping station welcomes massive surge tank after dramatic journey.

What weighs 350,000 pounds and acts like a hydraulic brake as water is pumped from Lake Mead to SNWA's water treatment facilities? It's the hydropneumatic surge tank, one of the final pieces of the low lake level pumping station. The 132,000-gallon tank will safeguard the pumping station’s 12 high-lift pumps by capturing and storing massive quantities of water in the unlikely event of a surge, such as an emergency power failure.

The SNWA's low lake level pumping station will ensure Southern Nevada maintains access to its primary water supply in Lake Mead, even as lake levels decline due to the ongoing drought. The pumping station is expected to be fully operational in spring 2020.
