"This young queen has successfully raised her first daughters beneath the leaflitter of the rainforest floor. The nutritious fungus she fed them as larvae is now dwindling. If they don’t find food quickly, they will all starve..."
"Unfortunately for the ants, overground swarms of parasitic phorid flies are beginning to hatch. Leafcutter innards provide perfect incubation chambers for the young of these insidious insects."
Onto the rainforest, we now control leafcutters. They have a new unique food system, in which they gather leaves and store them. Minims take these leaves and place them on ant tiles where they turn into fungus, our food source. When using this fungus, refuse is created (aka POOP). Refuse chambers are needed to place this waste and to let it decay over time. Keeping it far away from healthy chambers is key, as ants walking over refuse get debuffs. There are a lot of big and dangerous creatures in the rainforest. We have access to larger leafcutter castes, including the Media and Majors. There is limited food across the map, and we are competing for food from another nearby leafcutter colony. Our objective; Collect 14,000 leaves before the enemy colony does or, an optional objective, Kill the enemy leafcutter queen.
Tips:
Use worker spam early game. Get around 50-60 workers. These workers are cheap and can gather a ton of leaves for the early game.
Around the time the workers are made, start media spam, around 45-50 or more media. These are staple leaf gatherers, gathering 15 leaves in one trip, compared to 7 that workers can carry. The media can also fight back decently well.
Later in the level, start to make majors. 16-19 majors will do. You can upgrade these are make more than the 19. These majors will be used to fight against the larger threats and against the enemy attack waves.
Taunt or Stun doesn't matter, although taunt is much better against the numerous large enemies in the level.
If you start to fall behind by a ton, you can attack the enemy leafcutter's trails and force them to retreat. Quickly collect from their retreated area and fall back, since they will send reinforcements.
Once you hit the 11,500-leaf mark, the enemy colony will send waves of level 3 leafcutter majors to try to kill your queen. Defend against these enemies.
If you cannot catch up and know defeat is imminent, you can try to kill the enemy queen. Use level 3 majors for the task. The enemy colony does get free major spawns in there underground from a nearby tunnel, so watch out.
Challenge:
The flies spawn on certain plant clusters. It's best to try to gather leaves from the areas before they spawn.
It's best to ignore the plants once they get infested, unless you need the leaves for one
final push to win.
Don't waste time making level 3 media and majors to fend off these flies. You can do so on lower difficulties or for the achievement.
It's best to save the big plant that is just right of your entrance outside. It's the first plant infested, and it can carry you to victory at the last moment.
