২০১৮ সালের ১৬ নভেম্বর মার্কিন ধর্মযাজক জন এলেন চাও বিনা অনুমতিতে নর্থ সেন্টিনেল দ্বীপে খ্রিষ্ট ধর্ম প্রচার করার উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে প্রবেশ করেন। পরে অ্যালেন চাওকে তীর ছুড়ে হত্যা করা হয়। সেন্টিনেলিজরা মানুষ মেরে প্রথমে কবর দেয়, কয়েকদিন পর সেই কবর থেকে মৃতদেহ বের করে সমুদ্রের তীরে ঝুলিয়ে দেয় যাতে ভয় পেয়ে বাইরের কেউ সেখানে প্রবেশ না করে। এসব ঘটনার ফলে ভারত সরকার দ্বীপটিতে পর্যটন নিষিদ্ধসহ বহিঃবিশ্বের সঙ্গে দ্বীপটির সব ধরনের যোগাযোগ নিষিদ্ধ করে দেয়। নর্থ সেন্টিনেলের গায়ে এঁটে যায় নিষিদ্ধ দ্বীপের তকমা।
