Waking up dahlias early can give you a head start on the growing season, especially in cooler climates. I pull mine out of storage 8 weeks before planting out (i plant out warly june and pull out of storage early April). My last frost date is May 15 for reference. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get your dahlias blooming as soon as possible:

1. **Check Tubers**: In late winter or early spring, check your stored dahlia tubers for signs of shriveling or rot. Healthy tubers should be firm and plump.

2. **Prepare Supplies**: Gather pots (at least a gallon in size for each tuber), well-draining potting mix, and labels if you wish to keep track of varieties.

3. **Potting Up**: Fill your pots with the potting mix, leaving enough room to place the tuber comfortably inside without bending it. The "eye" of the tuber (where the new growth comes from) should be facing up. Cover the tuber with soil so that the top is just below the soil surface.

4. **Watering**: Water the tubers well after potting, ensuring the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Continue to keep the soil lightly moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause the tubers to rot.

5. **Warmth and Light**: Place the pots in a warm, bright spot but out of direct sunlight. A temperature around 60-70°F (15-21°C) is ideal. If you're starting them in a location without much natural light, consider using grow lights to mimic sunlight.

6. **Growth Care**: Once the shoots emerge, make sure they get plenty of light to avoid leggy growth. You may need to rotate the pots for even growth. Water as needed to keep the soil moist.

7. **Hardening Off**: About a week or two before the last expected frost date, start acclimatizing your dahlias to outdoor conditions. Gradually increase their time outside each day over the course of a week to harden them off.

8. **Planting Out**: After the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, you can transplant your dahlias to their final location in the garden. Be sure to choose a spot with well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight.
