Meeting Kate Higgins at GalaxyCon Live – October 9th, 2021

It was a Tails kind of weekend so I brought a plush doll from my childhood to a video chat for the first time to ease my nerves. ^_^ After I met with Colleen O'Shaughnessey on Zoom, I had the privilege to chat with her predecessor, Kate Higgins. She is not just a voiceover artist, but she is also a singer and jazz pianist. I primarily recognize her as the voices of Tails from 2010-2013, Toph in flashbacks depicted in The Legend of Korra, and more recently, Mario's old flame, Pauline. Her performance in Super Mario Odyssey was where I found out about her awe-inspiring singing talent.

2:00 - 3:01 What captivated me about Higgins' portrayal of Tails was her ability to accurately match her voice to sound like a boy around his age and express emotion while retaining that voice. It was amazing that she got in character and contribute to the conversation for a minute, but it made me a little nervous because Higgins got so deep into it that it felt like I wasn't talking to her. Now that's professional voiceover acting. 😅

"Break Free (Lead the Way)" was not as well-known as "Jump Up, Super Star!" so Higgins didn't recognize it right away nor does she recall her involvement with the making of that track so after I sang my brief cover, I helped her jog her memory on that. HorrorKid had a couple questions he was dying to asking Higgins as well, and thankfully, I was able to keep my promise. It is an astonishing rarity to be given extended time to do so while still having having a bit of it to spare to talk about testing the waters as an independent artist and building connections with fellow creative individuals such as gabocarina96.
