Wood shake roofs can be a great roof covering. They hold up really well under hail storms, are environmentally friendly, and last typically 15-30 years depending on if you have the thinner or thicker shake installed. Insurance companies don't favor these types of roofs as they can spread a fire. In the Omaha metro, these types of roofs are typically found in the older, higher-end developments. Many of these homeowner associations originally only allowed wood shake or wood shingle roof coverings for their looks and as a sign of prestige. As decades passed, these associations were influenced by insurance companies and the evolution of better, more durable asphalt or composite shingles. This video shows you that even though the wood shake roof looked great from the ground, when you get up close to it, there are many holes worn through the shakes. The heavier worn areas are on the sides that face the sun. When the wood shakes are worn through or split exposing the felt paper underneath, that felt paper is the only remaining layer of protection your house has preventing a roof leak. If the sun exposure then wears a hole through the felt paper, then leaks will occur.



Replacing a wood shake roof on a larger home can be very expensive. Whether you are buying or selling a house with wood shakes, it's critical to have that roof inspected to find out its condition. Nobody wants that big ticket item staring them in the face if it needs replacing.
