Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had inaugurated a defence industrial corridor in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, one of two such zones planned by the government to support the development of regional defence companies.
Announcing the launch of the Tamil Nadu corridor on 20 January, Sitharaman said foreign and local defence companies had pledged to invest more than INR31 billion (USD434 million) in the industry zone over the next few years.
Companies that have expressed interest in investing in the corridor, she said, included Lockheed Martin and state-owned enterprises Ordinance Factory Board, Bharat Electronics, Bharat Earth Movers, and Mazagon Dock.
By supporting industrial development in the region the government had committed to developing infrastructure including railways and airports. The Tamil Nadu corridor links five regional cities: Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruchirappalli.
India’s other defence industrial corridor is planned for the northern region of Bundelkhand, which lies between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. This is intended to link cities including Agra, Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot.
In August 2018 the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said foreign and local industry had pledged to invest about INR37 billion in developing this corridor. The MoD said major foreign companies to have expressed interest in investing in the region include Boeing.
