Here's yet another reason why fish eat grubby looking larva. Horse and deer flies are in the insect Order Diptera, and comprise the Family Tabanidae known as tabanid flies or tabanids.There are close to 4,300 species of horse and deer flies in the world, and approximately 335 in the continental United States.

The adults are terrestrial. They lay eggs on vegetation, like stems or the underside of leaves. The eggs hatch, and the larvae crawl or drop into the water, which includes rivers, creeks, marshes, lakes, or ponds, where they live for 1 year and in some cases up to 3 years. During this period, they go through 4 to 9 molts.

The larvae of horse and deer flies are fairly straight, segmented, wormlike maggots that vary in color from tan to cream to brown . Various fleshy rings circle the body. They are robust, circular in cross-section, and taper to a point at both ends. There are no true legs, although there are nobby pseudopods or prolegs present.
