Low horsepower, low weight, maximum fun. The Toyota AE86 does not have impressive performance numbers, coming in at only 163 horsepower (modified) and 171 Nm of torque; but there is one key number and design trait that changes everything. It only weighs 880 kg which is incredibly light compared to other cars of its time such as the Skyline R32 known as 'Godzilla.' It weighed 1,430 kg and is a reason it's known for an ungodly amount of understeer. The low weight, short wheel base and manual transmission as well as a modified suspension, short gears makes for great acceleration and one specific technique critical in touge racing - slip angle. Slip angle is like power sliding which itself is sort of a half drift. Initial D, the racing anime has a very prevalent showcasing of slip angle by Takumi in his 86 Trueno and is one of the reasons why it is actually possible for slower cars to outpace cars with higher performance. Its the driver, not the car. Slip angle is very hard to spot to the untrained eye, and difficult to master. In this video you can see that I almost did it perfect, save for maybe too much angle and a manual correction instead of letting the car do its thing. Slip angle is faster in specific situations (hair pin turns especially) than full grip and is necessary to drive a slow car fast.
