India’s S5 Nuclear Submarines | Game Changer

India’s S5-class nuclear submarines have now officially entered the construction phase, marking a decisive leap in India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence. While the Arihant class submarines were primarily technology demonstrators, the S5 class represents a full-scale strategic weapon system.

The S5 submarines are expected to be almost twice the size of Arihant, powered by a 200-megawatt nuclear reactor, giving them far greater endurance, speed, and stealth. Each S5 SSBN is designed to carry 12 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, likely **K-5 or K-6, with estimated ranges of 5,000–6,000 km.

This capability fundamentally changes India’s strategic posture. With long-range SLBMs deployed on survivable nuclear submarines, India moves closer to assured second-strike capability—the core of credible nuclear deterrence. Unlike land-based missiles, SSBNs are extremely hard to track and neutralize, making them the most stable leg of the nuclear triad.
