On the way to becoming a classic of the contemporary Art Week of Madrid, “Theriomorphism” makes a comeback to the Kreisler Gallery. Lead by Okuda San Miguel, alongside the four guests he has selected: AJ Fosik, Christybomb, Phyllis Galembo and Matthew Grabelsky.
“Theriomorphism” is a contemporary art pop-up exposition, organized by Ink and Movement and curated by Okuda San Miguel, the world-renowned reference artist based in Madrid internationally known for his particular art form, which is displayed in his private studio as well as in public spaces.
Okuda does not only display his work, but also takes this opportunity to invite several artists around the world under his own criterion to show their creations in Madrid for a short period of time. The collaborative art-piece created every year by the Cantabrian-born artist and his invitees on the days prior to the inauguration forms the icing on the cake of this event. (In previous years people like Charlie Immer, Hell’O Monsters or Samuel Salcedo).
This year, "Theriomorphism V” will be held from 20-25th February, at the Kreisler gallery, one of the most popular ones in Madrid. We are honored to have the event graced by members such as AJ Fosik, Christybomb, Phyllis Galembo and Matthew Grabelsky, all of them under the spell of “Theriomorphism".
The first of our theriomorphist-bewitched artists, AJ Fosik's, bases his artwork on folklore, taxidermy and atavistic rituals, creating intricate pieces of tridimensional art. Second and opposite to it, Christybomb, is used to combine “innocent” elements, avant-garde items and detailed mosaics with non-conventional materials. To everyone’s surprise, Grabelsky, a master of surreal hyperrealism, displays the art of crowning human bodies with various animal skulls in the famous New York metro trains. He mixes ordinary elements with extraordinary plausible elements and, by doing so, he surpasses the expectations of his viewers. Last but not least, Galembo is a thorough investigator of the transforming power of ritual garments. She was inspired from her voyages to Africa and South America. These travels are later reflected in some of her photographs and provide a great visual impact.
When we refer to the myth of the lycanthrope, commonly known by Europeans as the werewolf, we are actually making use of the concept of Theriomorphism. It was actually the Greek, who due to their quest of describing worldly facts by myths and symbols, developed a concept in which the crimped man was submitted to the untamed animality that surrounded him. Hence, Theriomorphism (Therion, wild animal and anthrōpos, man) signifies a man that possesses animal features or that in some case, has the power of turning himself completely or partially into one of them. But it’s not only been us, the Europeans, who in some of our worst moral and historical nights have fallen for and believed in Theriomorphism. Many other cultures have also used the myth of the animal-man: from the Egyptians to the African tribes who believed in the leopard-man as well as the so-called bestiaries that displayed images of mind mediaeval animals. Finally, it is the contemporary creators that are now making use of theriomorphic images and creating visualizations of the actual human, his identity and his relation with his surroundings of materialistic reality.
