Tenzin Lekshay is one of the 30,000 Tibetan refugees living in Mcleodganj town in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. His family fled to India with the Dalai Lama, along with 80,000 other Tibetans, after a failed uprising in 1959. In his conversation with the host Harshita Rathore, Lekshay talks about the Tibetan community-in-exile, their culture, their determination to carry forward the non-violent struggle against China and their hope to one day go back to their homeland, Tibet. (The series has been produced with our publishing partner Religion Unplugged.)

“The Dinner Table” is an award-winning observational docuseries produced by Newsreel Asia and co-published with the U.S.-based magazine Religion Unplugged. Each episode focuses on one of India’s persecuted communities, exploring what identity-based discrimination and violence do to the minds and hearts of its members. Docuseries host Harshita Rathore cooks a meal with the family and sits down for dinner with them, whilst the crew films the unscripted, heart-to-heart conversations that happen. “The Dinner Table” won the 2022 EPPY Award in the U.S., in the “Best Community Service Reporting” category, and was a runner-up in the “Best Investigative/Enterprise Video” category. It was also a runner-up in the 2021 EPPY Awards, in both the “Best Collaborative” and “Best News or Event Feature Video” categories.
