This video will describe you about OSD. How you can define the OSD, what are the factors on OSD and its assumptions.So let me define you first OSD.

Well, Overtaking sight distance is define as planning to overtake the slow moving vehicles along with safety against traffic of opposite direction is known as overtaking sight distance(OSD). The least distance accessible to the vision of the driver of a vehicles.

When all the vehicles travelling on a road maintain the same design speed then the purpose of overtaking is avoided. When there is different vehicles on the road and having different speed on each vehicles then it is called as "Mix Traffic."

Under the mix traffic condition the fast moving vehicles overtake the slow moving vehicles, this process is not applicable through out the length of the road therefore overtaking of slow moving vehicles with sufficient safety should be adopted at frequent distance interval. The distance for overtaking sight distance should be measured along the centre of the road and vision of the driver. The eye level of the driver in this case is 1.2m and object(opposite vehicles) eye level is also 1.2m. So in the OSD the eye level of driver from the road surface and object is same.

Factors on OSD is nothing but a "Speed, Distance, Skills And Gradient". So this factors are depends on the design speed of the road and well drivers skills. Assumption you can write as To overtake the slow vehicles.
