The German Namibian Genocide is one of the darkest chapters in the history of colonialism. It was the systematic extermination of tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people by the German colonial forces between 1904 and 1907. The genocide began as a response to an uprising by the Herero and Nama people against the German occupation of their land and cattle. The German commander, Lothar von Trotha, issued an extermination order that stated: "Within the German borders, every Herero, with or without a gun, with or without cattle, will be shot."

The German troops pursued the rebels into the desert, where they cut off their access to water and food. Those who survived were captured and sent to concentration camps, where they faced brutal conditions, forced labour, sexual abuse, and medical experiments. Many died of disease, starvation, and exhaustion. It is estimated that up to 80% of the Herero and 40% of the Nama population were wiped out.

The genocide was largely ignored by the international community at the time, and Germany did not officially acknowledge it until 2021. After years of negotiations with Namibia, Germany offered an apology and a financial aid package of more than €1.1 billion. However, some activists and descendants of the victims have rejected the deal as insufficient and demanded reparations.
