This week on Mad River Outdoors, we’re back in Tug Hill, NY for Part 2 of our tiny cabin renovation and winter prep series! Over two full days on site, we made big progress transforming our off-grid homestead and preparing for Tug Hill’s harsh winters (with over 180 inches of snow every year).

✅ Installed a 30 Amp line to power the tiny cabin alongside solar
✅ Added and painted plywood under the sliding glass door
✅ Replaced a broken cabin window with painted plywood
✅ Continued interior cleaning and vacuuming, moving into the basement

Property History
I purchased 4.8 acres of abandoned property in the Tug Hill Region of Upstate New York at a tax sale. The land borders property I already owned and came with a 600 sq. ft. camp, a full barn with a 12x12 garage door, and a lean-to for extra storage. There’s also a third building — once a chicken coop — that’s in rough shape.

Now begins the adventure: restoring the camp, renovating the barn, clearing the land, and prepping for Tug Hill’s brutal winters. Every project is a step toward turning this neglected property into something special.
