China has over 60% of the world's rare earth mining capability, 89% of global separation capacity, and over 90% each of the world's refining and magnet production industries.

By comparison, the US has about 16% of the Rare Earth mines, 0% of RE separation, 0% of RE refining, and 1% of global magnet production.

This means that even RE mined in the United States need to be sent to China for processing, refining, and production of magnets. More shocking numbers: in 2021, over 98% of RE metals used in Europe were imported from China, and of the heaviest of the Rare Earth elements, neighbors Myanmar and China together have 100% of all the global mining capacity.

Experts predict that these advantages will not be overcome for several decades, perhaps longer. This means that the US, Europe, and other nations that rely on crucial RE elements for advanced weapons systems, satellite technologies, and green energy projects will be at the mercy of China--and even Myanmar and some African nations--to build and sell us the magnets required to make all this tech actually work.
