August 9, 1945, just days before the end of World War II a tragedy occured when two trains had an unavoidable collision just West of the crossing in Michigan, North Dakota. A one-degree turn obscured the stopped train and a second was unable to stop before plowing into the last car at approximately 35 miles per hour. This send the car into the air, splitting it in half and killing almost everyone on board. The remaining passengers died within hours of the collision due to injuries sustained in the accident. Thirty-four people in total lost their lives on that night; 20 Army and Navy personnel and 14 civilians. This accident is the worst train collision tragedy in North Dakota history.

While traveling has always been a passion of mine, as a Historian, I also find myself being intrigued with the stories of the past. Each place has an interesting and unique story to tell. Whether I use the "usual resources" for that story or I have the opportunity to meet and discuss them with the best source of all, namely the locals, it is my hope to learn something only few know and be able to pass it on to each of you.
