Icem Surf GTO 3D Model, walk around and main theoretical surfaces

Hi everyone,

Today, I would like to show you how I started to create the GTO-R in IcemSurf.

Here, you can see the main body parts. I adapt my modelling skills to each project, and here, the idea is to work mainly on controlling the sections on wheel arches, bonnet and body side.

The GTO is a muscle car, and sections and proportions must guide the design process; this is why it almost does not have feature lines other than the front and rear graphics, plus the side fender crease line that fades out on the rear muscle.

We also have a feature line along the body side that starts on the fender outlet and divides the body side between the part of the section pointing to the sky and the one to the ground.

I created big surfaces for this model to design these volumes, defining the front and rear wheel arches muscle and the main body side section. You can see that the rear muscle surface is a big patch that intersects with other volumes, but the portion of the surface you see after being faced is tiny according to its extension, meaning that there is something else you can see at the first glimpse. This big surface is like the first brushstroke, and later on, you must give more definition when you have all the sections under control.

The same method is used for the roof rail and C-pillar; it is a big patch cut later with a line that is 3D projected on the surface. However, I need the big one to create the intersection with the rear muscle and consider how to design the blend between both.

I repeat the strategy for the bonnet: no feature lines, control the volume by sections.

Inlets and outlets on the body are not more than graphics; we need to control how we project these graphics on the surfaces, but it will be easier if you have created an excellent volume before.

3D modelling is very complex, and experience is the best tool for making everything faster without compromising quality. You will be more able to do what you want (or very close) in the first loop; this is the trick, but it will take years...

Designing this model took me about 40 hours, so it is not a perfect example of an A-Class model, but it works as a concept proposal. With this patch layout, if the model needs to be modified because of design input, it may not be ready the next day, but it will definitely be prepared in a couple of days. Also, this data could be shared with CAD engineers (not possible with poly data) for a preliminary study.

Some people will say that it could be easier and faster in another way, with another software or with Subdivision; it could be...

This is just mine.
