One of my teachers, George Shdanoff, used to say that acting is seventy five percent courage. I have found that to be true over and over again. Bold choices do not come from trying to be clever or correct. They come from preparation and a willingness to let go of control.

The first part is homework. Sitting with the material long enough that it starts to work on you instead of the other way around. When you use your imagination deeply, ideas rise up that do not come from logic. They come from instinct, memory, and association. Often they feel strange or even wrong at first. That is usually a good sign.

The second part is courage. The courage to look foolish. The courage to not color inside the lines. The courage to stop worrying about what you should do and allow yourself to respond before you have time to edit. This is where actors get dangerous in the best way. Impulses arrive unfiltered. Choices become specific, surprising, and alive.

When actors stop trying to be right, they start being interesting. And when they surprise themselves, they surprise everyone else in the room. That is where real work lives.
