He has served as Chief Secretary of united Andhra Pradesh. After retirement he was appointed as chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Brahmin Welfare Corporation. But, he has lost the post for allegedly posting and sharing anti-government comments on social media.

IYR Krishna Rao opposed the government’s decision of granting entertainment tax exemption to the Gautami Putra Satakarni film, in which Hindupur MLA N Balakrishna played the lead role.
