Small description and my thoughts on this amazing artist 👇

Sofonisba Anguissola is one of those artists that feels kind of overlooked considering how important she was. She came from Cremona in the 1500s, and something pretty unique about her family is that her father actually encouraged her and her sisters to study painting, which wasn’t really something women got to do at the time. She learned under Bernardino Campi, a respected portrait and religious painter of the Lombard school, and her talent was strong enough that even Michelangelo gave her feedback on her work. Her skills and prowess were unparalleled and she excelled beyond all her peers.

What really set her apart was her magnificent portraits, although she didn't have much choice as women were not really allowed to paint or view nvdes. She ended up at the Spanish court working for Philip II, painting royalty and teaching Queen Elisabeth of Valois to paint as well. Later in life she met Sir Anthony van Dyck, who admired her a lot, and she even gave him advice about painting. He actually painted a painting of her when she was 92 called "Sofonisba Anguissola" in 1624. She somehow managed to live all the way to 93, which is wild for the Renaissance, and apparently she was painting pretty much until the end, what a legend! Finally, she cleared a path for later women artists to rise to heights that were previously unimaginable. Without her, I imagine many of the women artists I've already covered would've had a much harder time rising to the heights they did.

Thanks for learning about these beautiful paintings and this awesome artist with me! ❤️
