Swedish and Russian officials gathered in central Moscow on Thursday afternoon to dedicate a monument to Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, revered for helping tens of thousands of Jews escape death in Nazi-occupied Hungary.

Soviet troops arrested Wallenberg in 1945, and Soviet officials later claimed, without offering proof, that he had died of a heart attack in 1947.

Wallenberg was rehabilitated as a political prisoner by the Russian General Prosecutors office in December of last year, but no further details concerning his death have been revealed.

Last week a joint Swedish/Russian commission released a report, summing up results of a 10-year investigation into the Swede's death.

The study found some evidence to contradict the Soviet official version, but little to support other theories suggesting Wallenberg was executed or lived on for years or decades, imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital under a false name.

Swedish members of the panel said that they wanted to keep searching for clues.

"Regarding Russia, we've been cooperating for the last 10 years, trying to figure out what happened to Wallenberg and in December 10 we made public two reports from the Russian and Swedish sides and it was an important issue between Russia and Sweden and is not a sore point between us as it was between Sweden and the Soviet Union."
