Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has announced a bold plan to permanently end Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program. Speaking in Mississauga on September 3, 2025, Poilievre argued that the program suppresses wages and takes jobs away from Canadians, particularly youth and long-term unemployed individuals.

Under the proposed plan, no new TFW permits would be issued nationwide. A transition period of up to five years would be implemented for regions with ultra-low unemployment rates. Additionally, a separate, standalone program would be created for agricultural labour that is genuinely difficult to fill.

Critics, including NDP MP Jenny Kwan, have labelled the proposal as "ridiculous" and "political," suggesting that the current TFW system is mismanaged by the Liberal government.

This development comes amid growing scrutiny of the TFW program and concerns about its impact on wage growth and employment opportunities for Canadians.
