The historical Bogambara Prison in Kandy is a significant landmark in Sri Lanka. It's not just a prison, but a place tied to many stories from the country's history, politics, and criminal law.
History and Significance
Construction: The prison was built in 1876 during the British colonial era. It's considered to be Asia's only longest building constructed on a single foundation. It is also said to be similar in architectural style to the famous Bastille Prison in France.
Location: The land where the prison was built was originally a drained lake, the Bogambara Wewa. According to local folklore, this is the same place where Ehelepola Kumarihami and others were drowned during the last Kandyan period.
Death Penalty: Bogambara Prison was a site where capital punishment was carried out. Its gallows were said to be the only ones capable of hanging three people at once. Between 1876 and 1975, 524 criminals were executed here. The famous Maru Sira (D.J. Siripala) was also among those who were executed here.
Famous Prisoners: Prominent political leaders like Philip Gunawardena and Dr. Colvin R. de Silva were also detained here as political prisoners.
Current Status
In 2014, the Bogambara Prison was closed, and its operations were moved to the new Dumbara Prison in Pallekele. The old building is now considered a structure of archaeological value. There are plans to turn it into a cultural park under a new development project. Currently, it is only open for limited public exhibitions.
