Founded as American Releasing Corporation in 1954 by James H. Nicholson and entertainment lawyer Samuel Z. Arkoff, the company released independently produced, low-budget and genre films (e.g. horror, sci-fi, and African-American). The company's name got changed to American International in 1956. Acquired by Filmways for $30 million in 1979 and ceased operations in 1980. 40 years later, the company was brought back by MGM in 2020.
