When Michael Shanks had his star actor dry retching before a scene, he knew he’d nailed the right amount of horror effects.
In this episode of ReelTalk, Ben interviews the Aussie writer and director of the latest body horror movie, Together.
Shanks (Rebooted, The Wizards of Aus), a self-confessed film making nerd, tells Ben production on set was pretty intense and he felt lucky his lead actors were real-life couple, Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist, 21 Jump Street) and Alison Brie (GLOW, Promising Young Woman).
In Together, Tim and Millie (Franco and Brie) begin to physically merge together after a supernatural experience.
Shanks says the movie was inspired by his own anxieties from being in a long-term relationship and explores themes of codependency and identity.
Much like last year’s hit, The Substance, Shanks tells Ben he enjoyed using body horror techniques in Together, and even shows Ben one of the special effect props from the movie.
