1. Why Eye Contact Is So Important (0:44)
I’ll use my favorite analogy to explain this. The best way I like to think about public speaking, in general, is like having coffee with someone. When you’re in deep conversation with one another, no phones or distractions, you want to be completely present for the other person whether it’s your friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, family member. Let’s say we’re having a coffee with each other, as you can see from this live example, it makes you feel uneasy when I don’t look directly at you when I’m speaking, you feel a small anx in your stomach. Naturally, when you’re speaking to a large audience or classroom, it’s like you’re grabbing coffees with everyone in the room, so if you’re only looking at 1 direction, you’re not being present for everyone else and that’s exactly why mastering eye contact is so crucial, it enables you to be present for every single person in the room and engage with them essentially. Now that we have that out of the gate, WHY do so many struggle with this concept? Which brings me to my 2nd question. This is how to master eye contact during presentations.
2. My Framework to Mastering Eye Contact (1:27)
1 – Never deviate eye contact from your audience and your slides. Here’s an example.
2 – You need to have addressed every group in the pitch. This doesn’t mean every single person in the room so don’t get stressed about this, but rather if we say the room is divided like so, that you’ve at least pivoted once in all 3 of these areas.
3 – Prioritize to Maximize Rule; you need to figure out what the goal of your presentation is and if there’s any differences in power dynamic with your audience. So, if you’re presenting to 50 people, but the goal is to win business and the CEO decides whether you get the contract, you should be focusing on him. This is how to master eye contact during presentations.
3. My Rant on Eye Contact (3:30)
The simple reason why most people have trouble is because there’s SO MANY wrong ways that people are being taught it. Some experts say to stare at one point during your entire pitch, some say to make your eye contact random, others say to make sure in long speeches that you’ve looked at each person INDIVIDUALLY at least once, and the list goes on! Another aspect I find confusing about eye contact is that it varies so much depending on how the space looks (are you presenting in a square classroom, or a 180 degree type room) or even the number of people you’re speaking to at once and of course, in some cases, especially in board meetings or the business competitions I’ve been to, this concept gets even more complicated because you need to figure out how to prioritize the intended audience vs. the spectators and how to balance that as well. Think about it like if the boss of a company is sitting in the room with 100 other entry level employees. Do you prioritize the CEO and look at him the entire time or do you spread everything out equally to everyone? There you go, I’ve said what you’ve all been thinking about and not to worry, I have a solution for this dilemma which is my framework to mastering eye contact and it goes like this. This is how to master eye contact during presentations.
