Poland vs Slovenia | Full Match | CEV EuroVolley 2023 SEMIFINAL 🔥🏐
What a dramatic night in Rome! In one of the most intense clashes of the tournament, Poland faced Slovenia in the semifinal of CEV EuroVolley 2023 at the packed Palazzo dello Sport. A place in the final and a chance to fight for the European title were on the line — and both teams delivered high-level volleyball.
Poland defeated Slovenia 3-1 with set scores 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21, booking their first EuroVolley final since 2009.
The match started with Slovenia in control. They played confidently in the first set, applying strong serve pressure and taking advantage of Polish errors. Slovenia closed the opening set 25-23 and immediately put pressure on Nikola Grbić’s squad.
In the second set, Poland responded like a true contender. After falling behind early — including two aces from Klemen Čebulj — Poland regrouped after a crucial timeout. Their block-defense system improved, their attacking efficiency increased, and they capitalized on Slovenian mistakes to take the set 25-21 and level the match.
The turning point came in the third set. Slovenia’s setter Gregor Ropret twisted his ankle and was forced to leave the court. His injury disrupted Slovenia’s offensive rhythm, and Poland immediately took control. With powerful serving and dominant attacking, Poland won the third set 25-20 and grabbed full momentum.
In the fourth set, both teams battled hard until 11-11. Then Poland produced a decisive six-point run, fueled by aggressive serving and unstoppable hitting. Slovenia tried to come back, but Poland stayed composed and closed the set 25-21 to win the match 3-1.
Wilfredo Leon was the star of the night and the top scorer of the match with around 25 points. He delivered crucial attacks, powerful serves, and important blocks in key moments, especially in the final two sets. His leadership and explosiveness made the difference when it mattered most.
For Slovenia, Klemen Čebulj and Rok Možič led the scoring with about 15 points each, keeping their team competitive throughout the match. Despite a strong start, the injury to Ropret and Poland’s rising intensity proved too much to overcome.
Statistically, Poland finished with more blocks (10-7), while Slovenia had more aces (5-3). The match lasted approximately 118 minutes and was filled with momentum swings, long rallies, and emotional celebrations.
This victory was especially significant for Poland because Slovenia had defeated them in the EuroVolley semifinals in both 2019 and 2021. In 2023, Poland finally broke that pattern and advanced to the final, where they eventually went on to win the European Championship title — their first since 2009.
An unforgettable semifinal full of power, passion, and redemption.
