We visit the Reiterlesmarkt, the Christmas market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which is world-famous for its romantic, medieval old town. During Advent, the city shines in the Christmas lights and Rothenburg's landmarks such as the Plönlein, market square and town hall, as well as the castle gate, look like something out of a winter fairy tale. It is hard to escape the magic, especially at night. We also pay a visit to the Christmas village, the headquarters of the well-known Christmas decoration shop "Käthe Wohlfahrt". In between, we enjoy the local specialty, a Rothenburg snowball. A wonderful panoramic view from the town hall tower and a short walk along the old town wall make our trip to Rothenburg perfect.
The Reiterlesmarkt, the Rothenburg Christmas market, has been around since the 15th century. On the picturesque market square, around the imposing town hall and the mighty St. Jakob's Church, there are 61 Christmas-decorated stalls with a wide range of Christmas decorations, handicrafts, culinary delicacies and much more. We enjoy a warming mulled wine and delicious Franconian sausages. A speciality is the Rothenburg snowball, a sweet, spherical pastry made from shortcrust pastry. The snowball come in many different flavors and each one is very filling! But why is the Christmas market actually called the "Reiterlesmarkt"? In ancient times, the Reiterle (horseman) was considered an emissary from another world who floated through the air with the souls of the deceased in winter. But over the centuries, the Reiterle has changed into a friendly herald who delights people, especially at Christmas time.
Just a few meters from the market square is the headquarter of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the world's largest retailer of traditional German Christmas decorations. The company's lavishly decorated Christmas village is modeled on a Franconian market square. The white-decorated and slowly rotating Christmas tree in the middle is a real eye-catcher. With its colorful Christmas tree decorations, countless lights, nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids and much more, the Christmas village has become an attraction that is on the list of many tourists from near and far.
The entire old town shines with Christmas lights. The Plönlein, Rothenburg's iconic landmark, is particularly atmospheric. At the "Little Square by the Fountain", as the literal translation goes, every tourist takes at least one photo!
The town hall tower offers a wonderful overview of Rothenburg and the Reiterlesmarkt. The challenge is not just the 220 steps that have to be climbed. The stairs get narrower and steeper towards the top, and getting out onto the equally narrow viewing platform is a climb. For this reason, there is even a traffic light system for the climb and only a maximum of 20 people are allowed on the tower at the same time. But the effort is worth it, the view is fantastic!
Our visit to Rothenburg ends with a short walk through the castle gate, the castle garden and along the city wall. There is also the medieval crime museum to discover. But we'll leave it at that for today and go home with a new (pig-like) Christmas tree bauble in our luggage! 🐷😂
