This educational video documents feather awareness and early preening behaviour in an African Spotted Eagle-Owl owlet (Bubo africanus).

The observation begins with the owlet waking from a resting position, during which a loose feather is visible attached to the chest fluff. The owlet notices the feather, looks down, and attempts to remove it using the beak, demonstrating awareness of feather position and body surface.

After removing the feather, the owlet holds it briefly in the beak before releasing it. The owlet then looks down into the inner nest area, where pea gravel is present, visually following the feather after it is dropped.

Interactions with loose feathers form part of early feather maintenance learning, helping the owlet develop coordination, beak control, and awareness of feather placement. These behaviours support later effective preening and overall feather condition.

The footage was recorded in a purpose-built owl nest box positioned approximately 3 metres above ground in a private garden in Johannesburg, South Africa. The owlet is being raised naturally by an adult female.
