DBT talks about how we can be in one of three primary states of mind:

1️⃣Emotion Mind: This state is dominated by feelings and emotions. It can sometimes lead to hasty decisions based on those intense emotions without taking the broader picture into account. When we are in emotion mind, there is usually a sense of URGENCY.

2️⃣Reasonable Mind: In contrast, reasonable mind is guided by facts and logic. Decisions here are made objectively, without the influence of emotional considerations. I like to think of a reasonable mind as a computer - no feelings, just facts.

3️⃣Wise Mind: We aim to operate from our wise mind. We all have it, even if our emotions are loud and it’s hard to access. Wise mind integrates both the emotional and reasonable minds, allowing for decisions that respect our feelings but are also informed by reason and logic. It’s our inner guide… that part deep down that knows what we value and how we want to live our lives.

It can take time and practice to know what is feels like to access wise mind. Here’s some ways to try:

pause, breathe, and listen to see if wise mind has something to communicate with you
sit quietly and notice your thoughts - are they wise minded? If not, ask yourself what wise mind might say
journal
talk to someone you care about and ask them to support you in accessing the knowing part of yourself
